In 2010, the Special Programme Eastern Europe after ten years will be integrated in the Foundation's Basic Programme. The last call for applications is April 1, 2010. After this last call for papers, applications from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarussia will be considered within the Foundation's Basic Programme.
 
Grants
Grant applications may be submitted for:
research and PhD scholarships for young historians to cover living expenses in the researcher’s home country (max. 24 months, thereof up to six months for stays in Germany)

short-term scholarships for young historians to finance research at German Eastern Europe Institutes, including the travelling expenses thereby incurred (max. six months)

financing invitations to historians from the above-mentioned countries to visit German universities or research institutes, including the travelling expenses thereby incurred (max. three months)

covering the costs for a lectureship for young German historians at a university in the above-mentioned countries, including the travelling expenses thereby incurred (max. two semesters)

Application
Applicants may be nominated at any time by German university professors or may directly contact the Foundation.

Applications should include the following documentation:
Application overview (Form for research scholarship application)

description of the research proposal (max. 8 pages)

work plan and time schedule

information about the travelling required for the proposed research project including a detailed list of travel and material expenses (travel costs and lodging – no flat-rate daily allowance or hotel expenses, material costs e.g. for photocopies or film versions of archive material, photographs, etc., not a lump sum for books)

curriculum vitae

statement as to whether the project has already been sponsored or will be sponsored by another institution or whether an application for funding has been submitted somewhere else

Additionally for scholarship applications:

copies of university certificates (translated and legally attested)

reference from a university lecturer from the applicant's home university (signed and stamped)

reference from a university lecturer from outside of the applicant's home country (signed and stamped)

reference from a German mentor, with his/her agreement to supervise the scholarship holder and to invite the applicant as a guest at his/her research institute (for stays in Germany only)

a declaration that guarantees that the applicant will be able to spend the majority of his/her time working on the project during the scholarship period

Additionally for lectureship applications:

invitation from the university at which the lectureship is to be established

Application deadline
Applications may be submitted to the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s head office at any time.

The last application deadline for the Eystern Europe Programme is 1 April, 2010. After this last call for papers, applications from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarussia will be considered within the Foundation's Basic Programme.

Smaller funding amounts (max. €15,000 – exception: scholarships) are granted by the Foundation through a simplified procedure with a deliberation time of approximately three to four months.

Application documents can be written either in German or in English.
