Youth Service Institute Early-Bird Registration deadline approaching fast…. Across the Street, Around the World youth are improving their communities through service and service-learning. Whether teaching a child to read or raising money to send bed nets to Africa to eradicate malaria, there’s no issue — large or small — not being addressed. Mark your calendars to join Youth Service America in Orlando, FL for the 2008 Youth Service Institute October 26-28. The Institute will present opportunities for participants to strategize critical ways to think AND act both locally and globally. It is the ideal environment for individuals and organizations to further develop their programs while learning inventive ways to engage young people as assets and resources on Global Youth Service Day and throughout the year. October 6-12 marks the kickoff week to raise awareness about service-learning successes across the country with the spirit of continuing the eff ort throughout the year. State Farm® Good Neighbor Service-Learning grants (US and Canadian Applicants) With generous support from the State Farm Companies Foundation, Youth Service America is offering the annual State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant for youth-led community improvement projects across the United States and Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick provinces only). These grants of up to $1,000 support teachers and service-learning coordinators in engaging st udents (ages 5-25) to implement service-learning projects for Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26, 2009. We encourage semester-long projects that are launched on Martin Luther King Day on January 19, 2009 and extend through Global Youth Service Day. Deadline: October 15, 2008 The Disney Minnie Grants GYSD 2009 (U.S. and International Applicants) The Walt Disney Company and Youth Service America are excited to announce grants of up to $500 to support child-led service projects. These grants s upport children (ages 5-14) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Teachers, older youth (15-25), and youth-serving organizations are also eligible to apply, if they engage younger children in planning and implementing the project. A significant part of the service must take place on GYSD 2009, April 24-26. We particularly encourage applicants to address the environmental issues and to seek to empower children as young citizens through their projects. Applicants can use the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a reference and review past grantees’ projects from all over the world at: http://tinyurl.com/disneygrant09. Applications are welcome from all countries. Applicants from India, China and Russia are especially encouraged to apply. While grant information is made available in Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, applications will only be accepted in English (an online translation tool is available at the YSA website).. They are seeking 2-5 minute videos from around the world that document how climate change is affecting the livelihoods of people in the realms of "conflict, migration, the urban space, rural institutions, drylands, social policy, indigenous peoples, gender, governance, forests, and/or human rights." No cash prizes will be given. The winner will enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC and will be invited to a series of learning and networking events, which can be even more valuable than cash.
